5._____ The Headmaster gives marching orders to Bill Weasley, Madam Pomfrey, Sirius Black, Severus Snape, and Molly Weasley before leaving Harry, Ron, and Hermione in order to see the Diggorys. Harry gets a mother’s hug and sleeps.

6._____ Hagrid tells Harry, Ron, and Hermione that he’s astonished Voldemort is back but with Dumbledore on their side, he is confident they’ll be all right. “’S long as we’ve got him, I’m not too worried.”

7._____ Dumbledore’s speech at the Leaving Feast says to the four houses that “we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.” He thinks the best resistance to Voldemort is “showing an equally strong bond of friendship & trust”

8._____ Hermione captures Rita Skeeter in her animagus form, a “large, fat beetle” with “markings around her antennae… exactly like those foul glasses she wears.”

9._____ Draco doesn’t toast Harry during Dumbledore’s “Remember Cedric Diggory” speech but gets blasted on the train when he tries to tell Harry, “You’re on the losing side, Potter! I told you not to hang around with riffraff like this!”

10._____ Fred and George explain they were swindled by Ludo Bagman, who didn’t pay his World Cup bet debts. He did, however, have a big bet with the Goblins on Harry’s winning the Triwizard Tournament. Too bad Harry didn’t win outright!

Discussion Points: What is Fudge’s problem? Why can’t he see that the Dark Lord is back? What complications does his state of denial give organized resistance to Lord Voldemort? Why does Dumbledore say what he does at the Leaving Feast? Knowing the “rest of the story” that lies from this point forward to the end of Deathly Hallows, enumerate several of the things that seem to change as a result of the events in Goblet of Fire—does Harry simply “grow” a little as he has through each of the preceding novels, or is there a great sea-change in his subsequent character and actions that wasn’t there before? And is that why the last Chapter is called The Beginning?

1._____ Harry, the Triwizard Cup, and what’s left of Cedric arrive back at the Maze. The Headmaster asks Alastor Moody to take Harry to the hospital wing but “Mad-Eye” takes Harry to his office instead.

2._____ Harry answers Moody’s questions until he asks how the Dark Lord treated the returning Death Eaters. Harry remembers that he had learned there was a Death Eater at Hogwarts. Crouch/Moody claims he is the Hogwarts Death Eater.

3._____ Crouch/Moody tells Harry how he fixed the Tournament in Harry’s favor. He is about to kill him to win the Dark Lord’s great favor when Albus & Co. break down the office door and stupefy him.

4._____ The real Moody crawls out of his seven lock chest with Dumby’s help. They give Veritaserum to Crouch/Moody as he comes out of his Polyjuiced state and he tells them how he escaped from Azkaban and from his father’s house.

6._____ Dumbledore asks Severus (1) to get Madame Pomfrey to help Moody and (2) to bring Fudge to interview Crouch/Moody. The Headmaster takes Harry to his office where Sirius Black is waiting. Black asks that Harry be allowed to sleep

7._____ Dumbledore refuses Sirius’ request because “Numbing the pain for a while will make it worse when you finally feel it.” Harry tells the story of everything that happened in the graveyard from Cedric’s death to Harry’s escape.

8._____ “Harry thought he saw a gleam of something like triumph in Dumbledore’s eyes” when he told him about the golden cage of light singing Phoenix song.

9._____ Harry doesn’t understand how his and Voldemort’s wand cores connected until Sirius explains Priori Incantatem, the Reverse Spell effect. It was only possible because the two wands had feathers from Fawkes the Phoenix.

10._____ Dumbledore and Sirius in dog form go to the Hospital Wing where Dumbledore explains that Harry must be allowed to sleep. Harry tells Ron and Hermione, “I’m all right. I’m just tired.” He drinks a purple potion and sleeps.

Discussion Points: Why does Dumbledore use Veritaserum to get the true story out of Crouch, Jr.? What is behind Dumbledore’s “gleam of something like triumph”? What is Sirius’ place in the telling of the Graveyard re-birthing party story? Goblet of Fire and Deathly Hallows share a structural element not seen in the other five novels–the double climax. After the duel in the graveyard is past, we suddenly get a second adrenaline surge as Mad-Eye turns out to be less Moody than we thought. In DH, we have the forest duel and Harry’s “death”, and then a second adrenaline surge in the duel in Hogwarts Hall. Why did Rowling choose this dual structure, and how are the four incidents related?

2._____ Voldemort’s “true family returns,” fall to their knees, and kiss the hem of his robes. The Dark Lord does not forgive or forget. “I want thirteen years’ repayment before I forgive you.” The Death Eaters thank him for his mercy.

3._____ Voldemort tells the story of his being vaporized at Godric’s Hollow, how he survived, and the string of good fortune that brought Peter Pettigrew to look for him, Bertha Jorkins to Albania, and the Dark Lord back to the UK.

4._____ Voldemort regains his first body (the nasty baby) via a potion he makes with Pettigrew’s help out of unicorn blood and snake venom. For the re-birthing potion he needed flesh of a servant, bone of the father, and blood of a fiend.

5._____ Voldemort hits Harry with a Cruciatus Curse. His insistence on using Harry becomes clear. He tells the Death Eaters that “I am now going to prove my power by killing him….You will be left in no doubt which of us is the stronger.”

6._____ The battle between Harry and the Dark Lord begins as a wizard’s duel. Harry is forced to bow, suffers the Cruciatus Curse, and then falls under the spell of the Imperius Curse. Harry escapes when a Death Eater accidentally interrupts.

7._____ Harry and Voldemort’s spells meet in midair “and a narrow beam of light connected the two wands, neither red nor green, but bright, deep gold.” The two “were enclosed in a golden, dome-shaped web, a cage of light.”

8._____ With Phoenix Song in the air, Harry forces a bead of light into the Dark Lord’s wand which emits “echoing screams of pain” and five human figures.

9._____ Cedric’s figure begs Harry to tell Cho he loved her while his parents tell him how to escape. All the figures close in upon Voldemort and the light cage collapses when Harry breaks the connection and runs for the Portkey Cup.

10._____ Dodging curses and headstones, Harry runs to Cedric before Voldemort gets the drop on him. As the Dark Lord raises his wand, Harry “Accio!”s the Portkey in a Cup just in the nick of time. “He heard Voldemort’s scream of fury.”

Discussion Points: What are Voldemort’s reasons for wanting to use Harry’s blood for his resurrection brew? How does Harry’s escape amount to a counter-resurrection on his part? The Dark Lord’s speech to his followers tells us what about him? Them? Contrast this Wizard’s Duel between Harry and Voldemort with the duel at the end of Order of the Phoenix, and the two duels in Deathly Hallows, noting especially the attitude of Voldemort versus that of Harry. What determines the outcome of each duel? Which elements change? Which elements remain the same?

2._____ Rita Skeeter gets in a last minute stab at Harry in the Daily Prophet by writing the article “Harry Potter: Disturbed and Dangerous” that appears the day of the Third Task. Harry bristles at her saying he might be a Dark Wizard.

3._____ Mrs. Weasley and Charley come to visit Harry during his family time on the day of the Third Task instead of the Dursleys. Harry helps Mrs. Weasley reconcile with Hermine and takes the two on a long tour of the Hogwarts grounds

4._____ Harry enters the Maze first with Cedric and encounters a boggart, an enchanted mist that turns his world upside-down, a Blast-Ended Skrewt, a Bulgarian using the Cruciatus Curse, and a Sphinx before the giant spider….

5._____ Harry distracts the spider attacking Cedric and it turns on him. He and Cedric manage to stun it but not before it sinks its pincers into Harry’s leg. Harry passes out from the pain but wakes up in time to see Cedric about to get the Cup.

6._____ Cedric, though, decides he cannot take the Cup. Harry saved him twice in the Maze and gave him the clue that helped him with the First Task. Cedric insists he take the Cup, Harry refuses, and then they agree to share the victory. Whoops.

7._____ The Triwizard Cup was a Portkey and it has dropped them into the Malfoy Estate’s back yard and their graveyard. Cedric tries to help Harry run for it, but….

8._____ Harry’s scar explodes with pain as a figure approaches carrying what looks like a baby or a bundle of robes. The figure obeys the baby in the bundle and “kills the spare.” Cedric drops spread eagled next to the retching Harry.

9._____ Wormtail ties Harry tightly to Tom Riddle’s headstone before bringing a stone cauldron big “enough for a full-grown man to sit in.” Peter puts the baby, daddy dust, his own right hand, a phoenix feather, and Harry hair in giant pot.

10._____ While Harry thinks, “Please let it be dead,” “a man, tall and skeletally thin” “whiter than a skull, with wide, livid scarlet eyes and a nose that was flat as a snake’s with slits for nostrils” appears. “Lord Voldemort had risen again.”
