Regina, I'm so sorry for your loss and how this anniversary must be so painful. Thank you for sharing how your wintered grief was stirred by DH.

Rowling has done a great service by her themes of death, loss and redemption. These themes are inextricably tied into faith in the books. I wept at faithful Dobby's death. And a favorite conversation is Harry's with Nearly Headless Nick about death at the end of OotP.

Thank you so much for this beautiful and touching letter.

Rumbleroar sends you a purr...

I'll agree with Travis. Wonderful review. My favorite part of OotP was the conversation that Luna and Harry had about hearing the voices through the veil, and how we'll see them again. Yes, death is the major theme of these books, but just as strong, just as palpable is solace, hope, a notion that even death is not a true end. "The last enemy to be defeated is death."

This is great. I've been debating someone on another site who was sorely disappointed with DH, and one of the reasons he gave was that the Hallows turned out to be pointless, especially the stone/ring, because it didn't serve an important enough plot device.

*crickets*

This essay should be read by all who were not moved by the book because they were being too damn overly-analytical.
