I think her grief is part of it, but the much larger issue shaping her psychological journey is loss of self-determination and loss of locus of control. Katniss has a personality type whose self esteem is motivated by autonomy, and the Capitol is calling the shots in her life at every turn, including the loss of her father in the mines (which was no accident) and the reaping (which I also believe was no accident). I’m working on a long post on Collins’ brilliant use of personality types in the trilogy, and how these types hold true even under significant psychological stress. Katniss unravels the way her type unravels. It’s brilliant characterization.

Any insight on how “psychology” plays a role in Collin’s development of the novel? It seems that Katniss’s pervasive sadness (arguably depression) and substantial grief over losing her father play a role in defining her through her evolving psychological journey…

Hi there…Have a question regarding the following:
“Ms. Collins has us watching the Hunger Games both as a Tribute via Katniss’ perspective and as the Games are experienced by Capitol and District watchers (hence our never seeing cameras, a point that Stephen King just doesn’t get). We are both viewed and viewer, which will have important consequences when we learn with Katniss who is telling the story-within-the-story.”

I had an impression with rereading the trilogy that when Katniss was narrating the camera work in the arena that she was actually reliving her HG experiences using tapes of the HGs after the fact. The epilogue talks about the difficulty of explaining the HG to her children..maybe the books represent an adult Katniss’ narrative of her HG experiences and aftermath to educate her children on what happened.

Re Katniss’s name referring to a black and white plant: Gale has black hair and eyes, while Gale is so blonde it’s almost white.

This may seem inconsistent and throw a nut in the works but how would you explain Gale’s last name? Hawthorne? I may be wrong but I believe that the Hawthorne bush has biblical significance(Christ’s crown if I remember correctly?). Would this link religion and spirit to Gale’s nature icon? Forgive me if I am wrong in this suggestion, it was a spur-of-the-moment idea.
Thank you for your lengthy post. I enjoyed reading it and found it incredible informative and creative.

Potentially. I normally don’t do such things and get annoyed when other people do, but I found this while looking The Hunger Games up for an assignment and really couldn’t resist, as I do find them truly awful.
