[...] Is Harry Potter evil? This is the fundamental question swirling around the controversial series. Here are two articles that address that question. The first explores a statement J.K. Rowling made with respect to witchcraft in the stories: “Witchcraft is just a metaphor for this other world of possibilities, beyond convention, that the mind can reach.” Read the full article at: http://www.hogwartsprofessor.com/witchcraft-is-just-a-metaphor/ [...]

The best thing about this Rowling interview archive gem (and her unequivocal confirmation) to me is: I've been saying this for a while now in public presentations with absolutely no proof that it was the author's intent! Now I've got it. Thanks, John!

Those two articles with Jo's statements on the "witchcraft" in HP being a metaphoric literary tool nailed it John!

As a former "anti-Potter" Evangelical teacher in the church, I needed that education in English traditional fantasy lit. Oh, about 6 years ago.

As you know I picked up a copy of Looking for God In HP and I've never looked back.

I found this comment to be especially helpful: "...Potter makes wonderful reading for adults for the same reason it’s catnip to kids: It gives them credit for having minds."

It is not the only symbolic value but witchcraft as an emblem for technology gets lots of support from me. The subtle parallels between the use of both in the series is poignant commentary on materialism. The heart that is not right is just as deadly with ecckletricity as it is with a killing curse - both technologies are misapplied with a vengeance.

This interview was fantastic! It certainly confirms Rowling's metaphorical/below-surface meaning, Christian-meaning intent. It's practically like a brick to the head. Thanks for sharing this; I'll be passing it on.

Congratulations on the good DHL feedback.
