I encourage everyone to see this delightful documentary if you can. You'll be impressed at how articulate and creative many of these bands are. And also at their passion for literacy.

As to the 400-500 Wrock bands link you posted, John. Isn't it inspiring to see two high school girls who have new creative ambitions--one to write, one to compose? And they're enhancing research skills as they carefully comb the books for song subject matter.

I see "the future of Pottermania" extending far beyond its beginnings in wrock into many areas of artistic expression. Even in wrock alone, you have poetry and music composition. If you listen to some wrock at the links in my article, you'll hear some well-crafted stuff.

I'm looking forward to what we'll see "rowling" from JKR's creation.

Uh oh, Curious Black and Luscious Badboy are rolling on the rug again, fur and fangs a blur...

Mary, sorry for the delay. Megan says:

<em>"That is so great that Mary has been in touch. Yes, she and her sister Deirdre are in the film, with a quick interview soundbite about wizard rock and its similarity to the punk rock movement. They were so wonderful to meet and work with, and I can't wait to see them both again in Chicago this summer (they'll be performing at the symposium there). Thanks for passing this along, and have a great weekend!"</em>

Kitties will take kibbles over fame any day...

Thanks for your welcome, Arabella - I'm afraid I won't be back very often, because i don't think I fit here any more. But wizard Rock is great, for the reason you mention - it's for *everybody*, little kids and grownups, boys and girls alike.

We do intend to see the movie when we are able, but what I was wondering was if we are in it? My sister, Deirdre, has been one of the major supporters of Wizard Rock in NY, and I know footage of her library was included because I saw it in the trailer. But I don't know if Megan and Mallory kept in any of the interview they did with us back in (I think) October, 2006? I'm very curious to find out!

Mary, it's great to see your name again here. Thank you, also, for the kind words. Gringott Grrls; I love it! (And just why did we not see any female Gringotts employees? Hermione, get busy!).

One thing I found so delightful about wiz rock is that it's not just a "fanBOY" phenom. There are girl bands as well, just as enthusiastic about creating music based on the books. Such artistic outpouring is just the beginning, I think, of many types of Potter artistic expression to come. Good artistry can join with scholarship to explore Potterdom.

The kitties are "running free" tonight, at least in the house...

Wow, Arabella! I know it's been a long time since I've been here, but this is a wonderful report and I can't wait to see the movie - among other things, because Megan and Mallory interviewed us for it, and because my twin sister is a huge supporter of wizard rock. This movement is one of the few things about the books I actually find positive right now.

(My sister is such a wizrock fan that she actually started a band herself, and we'll be playing at terminus, where I'll also be reading a couple of stories and participating in a panel discussion on Severus Snape Just in case anyone's curious about our band, we are those Goblin bankers, the Gringotts Grrls)

Thanks, PJ, for your kind comments. And I had a bad hair day, too. I always find a belt sander does wonders for the skin!

I'm glad you enjoyed the report; I wanted everyone reading it to feel as if they were there. It was a revelation and an experience. The Schuylers are delightful.

Mark of Marked As His Equal made an interesting observation: these young people aren't creating these bands because of what they've seen on TV or at movies. They're moved to do this because of reading books.

And it's these particular books, their themes, etc. You don't see this phenomenon with Spiderwick, Lemony Snicket or Golden Compass. That Rowling's books have inspired so many to artistic expression is, why...inspirational!

Now I'm inspired to go pet Flitquick...

Thanks for sharing this great story, Arabella. You're a very talented writer! It's wonderful to see the creativity and energy that Harry Potter is inspiring in young people. I'm sure my kids would love to see some wizard rock, and maybe come up with some of their own! Just not in my basement...
