Crimes of Grindelwald Trailer Released

Let me know what you think. Why can’t Dumbledore stand against Gellert Grindelwald?

We know from the books that Dumbledore said he put off fighting him until he no longer could – 1945 – because of his old love for him? Did he ever really explain?

Very interesting scenes in the trailer. I’m still wrapping my head around it. I give props to Warner Brothers who dropped the trailer during the This Is Us season finale.

First thought: Hogwarts: A History. Could people at one time apparate into Hogwarts? Was this changed after unwanted wizards entered??

The biggest “reveal” is in a quick shot of a man studying writings on a wall in what seems under ground. Close ups show a Lestrange family tree. Leta and Credence share a father!!!! The are half siblings. Imbd lists both a Mrs Lestrange and a character called “Credence’s aunt”. Is this purposeful in that it would be a major spoiler?? Besides being a Lestrange, I wonder what they are hiding?

Theseus shows up with the ministry to interrogate Dumbledore. At the end, he and Newt are together fighting something with great power and lay down a new spell which creates huge force and fire that looks like either a force field or is opening up the earth.

Credence has mastered his obscurus. That was quick work as only months have passed since his “destruction”.

    Those are some initial observations.

Dumbledore is in the DADA classroom in this trailer. We’ve always assumed he started as a Transfiguration teacher—is there anything in the HP saga that says so for sure, though? Could he have been in the DADA post some time before Professor Merrythought had the job? Has Rowling set up a parallel here to Voldemort’s curse on the DADA post years later?

And on a side note, I love the way ‘Tina looks here. She is coming into her own as a powerful force.

In looking at isolated shots of the trailer, – or rather gifs – while Newt and Theseus are battling, there is a great amount of debris flying around and what looks to be a big wind. I’m wondering if this has anything to do with Credence’s obscurus. They are fighting ahead of themselves and then begin looking up, pointing their wands into the air in a constant motion. Credence looked very angry when he smashed a bird-like cage in what looked like a circus tent. His seeming control of his obscurus in the rooftop scene lends itself to wondering if he will end up using it for either good or evil.

Why can’t Dumbledore stand against Grindelwald?

Perhaps from what we only know so far is partly through a comment J. K. Rowling revealed at Carnegie Hall in 2007.

“Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald, and that that added to his horror when Grindelwald showed himself to be what he was. To an extent, do we say it excused Dumbledore a little more because falling in love can blind us to an extent? But, he met someone as brilliant as he was, and rather like Bellatrix he was very drawn to this brilliant person, (the Dark side) and horribly, terribly let down by him.”

So I think the power of Dumbledore’s affection for Grindelwald is still having an effect on him even as we have moved on to Hogwarts and Paris in 1927.

And then this is revealed by Dumbledore to Harry Potter years later in Deathly Hallows,
“While I busied myself with the training of young wizards, Grindelwald was raising an army. They say he feared me, and perhaps he did, but less, I think, than I feared him… It was the truth I feared. You see, I never knew which of us, in that last, horrific fight, had actually cast the curse that killed my sister… I think he knew it.”

Another interesting thought here is that we have Dumbledore placing the pursuit of a Dark Master Wizard (Grindelwald) into the hands of a young wizard (Newt Scamander) still feeling out his magical calling and powers at a pivotal dangerous period in the history of the wizarding world.

Sound familiar ? Looks like history repeats itself later when one Albus Dumbledore assists in placing and raising another young wizard (Harry Potter) in pursuit of another Dark Master Wizard (Lord Voldemort) at another pivotal dangerous period in the history of the wizarding world.

However, Dumbledore had no choice in the matter with Harry Potter. This young wizard was the “chosen one” by prophecy.

  5. Are you guys going to do breakdown, speculation and theorize the new trailer?

  6. Yes. I’m working on a scene by scene look and speculation about the story-having-been-told in less than two minutes.

    Thank you for your patience.
