Part 1: True/False Questions
1._____ Goblet of Fire opens with the story of the mysterious murder of three Muggles in “the Riddle House” in Little Hangleton. The patrons in ‘The Hanged Man’, the local pub, believe there was dark magic involved.
2._____ Harry wakes up on Privet Drive when the scar on his forehead burns “beneath his fingers as though someone had just pressed a white-hot wire to his skin.” He goes to the mirror with a vivid recollection of his dream in his head.
3._____ Dudley Dursley’s school asked his parents to put him on a diet over summer vacation because “the school outfitters didn’t stock knickerbockers big enough for him anymore.” Grapefruit quarters for breakfast! Yummy.
4._____ Fred and George get Harry’s trunk but spill it in the Dursley’s living room and all of Harry’s cakes and sweets pour out. When they leave Dudley eats whatever he can find that they missed in the clean-up: ton-tongue toffee!
5._____ Percy Weasley is hard at work in the Burrow on a Flying Carpet report for his boss at the Ministry, Mr. Crouch, but he leaves it to give Harry a proper greeting and play dueling lawn furniture with Bill and Charlie.
6._____ The Portkey turns out to be an old boot that the two Diggorys, five Weasleys, Harry, and Hermione touch at the right moment for transport to the Quidditch World Cup site Mr. Weasley says is “miles away” on a “windswept moor.”
7._____ Barty Crouch accepts a cup of tea from “Weatherby” at the campsite and talks about his grandfather’s flying carpet “as though he wanted to leave nobody in any doubt that all his ancestors had abided strictly by the law.”
8._____ Krum catches the Snitch to win for Bulgaria at the Quidditch World Cup but is battered by a Bludger to the face. The Bulgarian Minister of Magic says, “Vell, ve fought bravely.”
9._____ Ludo Bagman appears and Disapparates to help with the riot where Death Eaters are torturing Muggles, the trio hear staggering footsteps, the spell “MORSMORDRE!,” “and something vast green, and glittering erupted from the patch of darkness Harry’s eyes had been struggling to penetrate.”
10._____ Mrs. Weasley is almost hysterical by the time her family returns from the World Cup. She was worried Voldemort had got her twins and the last thing she had said to them was they had to leave the Ton Tongue Toffees behind.
11._____ Amos Diggory wakes the Weasleys with the news that Arthur must rush to save Mad-Eye Moody from the Muggle “Please-men.” It seems the famous – and paranoid – retured Auror imagined an intruder and sent the dust-bins rocketing. Amos gives Molly some toast to apologize for waking her up.
12._____ Professor Moody arrives during Dumbledore’s talk before the feast, lightning flashes across the ceiling, he “eyeballs” the crowd front and back, and he sits down to a meal of sausage and a drink from his hip flask.
13._____ Draco Malfoy reads the Daily Prophet article about “Arnold” Weasley “having rushed to the aid of ‘Mad-Eye’ Moody” aloud to embarrass Ron. Draco and Harry trade insults and Draco attacks Harry when his back is turned. To Ron’s great pleasure and Professor McGonagall’s horror, Moody turns Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle into white ferrets that he bounces up and down stairs.
14._____ Hermione has been in the library preparing the materials she needs to organize the Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare (S.P.E.W.). Harry and Ron join up as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively. Free the house-elves!
15._____ Professor “Mad-Eye” Moody demonstrates the three Unforgivable Curses on three spiders. He gives everyone practice trying to resist the Imperius curse, but only Harry succeeds in hearing “another voice” “in the back of his brain” that argues with the commands of Moody.
16._____ Dumbledore reveals and explains the “impartial selector” of Tri-wizard Tournament champions: the Goblet of Fire. He sets it up inside an Age Line which no underage wizards can cross. Fred and George fail cross the line. Viktor Krum, Fleur de la Couer, Cho Chang, and Harry Potter are chosen by the Goblet of Fire as Tri-Wizard Tournament Champions.
17._____ “Mad-Eye” Moody and Severus Snape think that Harry has been chosen by the Goblet of Fire because unknown persons want Harry killed. Professor Moody suggests the magical object was confused by a Confundus Charm.
18._____ Mr. Ollivander weighs and inspects the Champions’ wands. Fleur’s has a Veela core, Krum dragon-heart string, Diggory a unicorn hair, and Harry a Phoenix feather. Each wand gets a test: only Fleur receives a bouquet of flowers.
19._____ Ron comes into the Gryffindor Common Room unexpectedly when Harry is talking to Sirius Black. Sirius “pops” out. Harry is furious with Ron (whose pajamas don’t fit), throws a POTTER REALLY STINKS! badge at him, and tells him to wear it to the task.
20._____ Ludo Bagman explains the task to the four champions (“Collect the Golden Egg”) on the way to the waiting tent. He then asks Harry, outside the tent, if he needs any help. Harry declines the offer of help because he is confident of his “Accio, Firebolt!” plan, though really frightened.
21._____ Fred and George tell Hermione how to get into the Hogwarts kitchens during the First Task party so she can help the house-elves prepare more food for the party. She finds Dobby and Winky there – and runs to get Harry and Ron.
22._____ Harry asks Cho Chang to the ball but he is too late. Cedric Diggory has already asked her so she turns Harry down. Harry remembers that pretty boy Cedric doesn’t “have enough brains to fill an eggcup.” He vows to beat Cedric in the second task, no matter what.
23._____ Ron tries in vain to find out who Hermione’s date is – and is furious when he learns it is “Vicky” Krum. He accuses her of “fraternizing with the enemy.” She tells him, if he doesn’t like it, he can ask her out next time before others do.
24._____ Unlike Ron, Hermione thinks anti-giant feeling among magical people “is just bigotry, isn’t it?” Together with Dumbledore, the three friends snap Hagrid out of his funk. He remembers his dad telling him, “Never be ashamed.”
25._____ Professor Moody arrives at the staircase in the nick of time to rescue Harry and the Map from Snape. He had been investigating the break-in in Snape’s office when he heard the search for Harry going on at the stairs. He bullies Snape and Filch into leaving the scene.
26._____ Dumbledore has a conference with Merchieftainess Murcus and the Tri-Wizard Tournament judges after the second task and they decide to give Harry full marks for showing “moral fiber” by trying to rescue all the hostages. Harry buys Dobby lots of socks.
27._____ Rita Skeeter exacts her written revenge on Hermione for sassing her in Hogsmeade; Witch’s Weekly prints “Harry Potter’s Secret Heartache” painting her as what Ron calls “a scarlet woman” and the hate mail arrives in droves.
28._____ Barty Crouch appears in the Forbidden Forest and, more than half out of his mind, begs to be taken to Dumbledore. Harry runs for the Headmaster but arrives back too late. Crouch has disappeared, Krum is out cold, and there is no trail in the woods. Karkaroff is furious.
29._____ Harry has a dream in Transfigurations class about Voldemort, Pettigrew, and Nagini. Professor Trelawney sends him to Dumbledore to be sure the Headmaster knows Harry scar is hurting and that the Dark Lord is coming back.
30._____ Harry watches the testimony of Igor Karkaroff, the sentencing of Ludovic Bagman, and then he witnesses the sentencing of Crouch’s boy and three Death Eater companions. The boy screams to his father for mercy – and is told by the bellowing Mr. Crouch, “You are no son of mine! I have no son!”
31._____ Harry enters the Maze first with Cedric and encounters a boggart, an enchanted mist that turns his world upside-down, a Blast-Ended Skrewt, a Bulgarian using the Cruciatus Curse, and a Sphinx before the giant spider….
32._____ Wormtail ties Harry tightly to Tom Riddle’s headstone before bringing a stone cauldron big “enough for a full-grown man to sit in.” Peter puts the baby, daddy dust, his own right hand, a phoenix feather, and Harry hair in giant pot. While Harry thinks, “Please let it be dead,” “a man, tall and skeletally thin” “whiter than a skull, with wide, livid scarlet eyes and a nose that was flat as a snake’s with slits for nostrils” appears. “Lord Voldemort had risen again.”
33._____ Voldemort hits Harry with a Cruciatus Curse in the Graveyard. His insistence on using Harry becomes clear. He tells the Death Eaters that “I am now going to prove my power by killing him….You will be left in no doubt which of us is the stronger.”
34._____ Harry and Voldemort’s spells meet in midair “and a narrow beam of light connected the two wands, neither red nor green, but bright, deep gold.” The two “were enclosed in a golden, dome-shaped web, a cage of light.” With Phoenix Song in the air, Harry forces a bead of light into the Dark Lord’s wand which emits “echoing screams of pain” and five human figures.
35._____ Crouch/Moody tells Harry how he fixed the Tournament in Harry’s favor. He is about to kill him to win the Dark Lord’s great favor when Albus & Co. break down the office door and stupefy him.
36._____ The real Moody crawls out of his seven lock chest with Dumby’s help. They give Veritaserum to Crouch/Moody as he comes out of his Polyjuiced state and he tells them how he escaped from Azkaban and from his father’s house.
37._____ “Harry thought he saw a gleam of something like triumph in Dumbledore’s eyes” when he told him about the golden cage of light singing Phoenix song.
38._____ Harry doesn’t understand how his and Voldemort’s wand cores connected until Dumbledore explains Priori Incantatem, the Reverse Spell effect. It was only possible because the two wands had feathers from Fawkes the Phoenix.
39._____ Dumbledore tells Fudge that the Dark Lord is back and that he has “been restored to his body.” Fudge refuses to believe it and he won’t consider the Headmaster’s advice about the Azkaban dementors or sending envoys to the giants. After Harry testifies to Fudge about Voldemort’s resurrection, Fudge suggests Harry is not a dependable witness. Albus tells him he is “blinded by the love of the office you hold” and the importance he puts on “purity of blood.”
