Has anybody heard whether J.K. Rowling plans to write two more “Fantastic Beasts” stories/screenplays, even if they are never made into movies? Maybe they could be sold just for charity? If so, I would buy them! RKV on June 26, 2023

Have recently re-read the late Dr. Michael N. Stanton’s book, “Hobbits, Elves, and Wizards: Exploring the Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings'” and compared it to John Granger’s “How Harry Cast His Spell.” I wonder what Dr. Stanton thought of J.K. Rowling’s “wizarding world” and what J.K. Rowling thought of Middle Earth. Does anybody know? Is there any research on whether Middle Earth influenced Harry Potter, and if so, has it been published? Thanks very much, RKV on June 27, 2023

Okay, I didn’t do my homework! Wikipedia.org has an entire page on “Harry Potter influences and analogues,” including “Lord of the Rings,” “Star Wars,” and many, many other sources. Now I see why many critics call “Harry Potter” unoriginal! All I can do is cling to this quote from James Stephens: “Originality does not consist in saying what no one has ever said before, but in saying exactly what you think yourself.” My apologies, RKV on June 28, 2023

  4. Read my ‘Harry Potter’s Bookshelf’ for a chapter length discussion of Rowling’s debts to the Inklings. Enjoy Beatrice Groves’ ‘Literary Allusion in Harry Potter’ for earlier sources of her work.

Please note that few readers will ever stumble upon your questions if you post them here.

Thanks for your reply at least, John!
In the last few days, having time to kill, I read “The Cuckoo’s Calling” and “The Silkworm,” both for the first time. I must admit, I couldn’t put these books down – but after consuming them, I couldn’t keep them down. I’m sure that they appeal to some readers, and I suppose that if a person is making a living on their analysis, he needs to “dance with the gal what brung yah,” but from now on, I’ll stick to Harry Potter (including any more Fantastic Beasts that may or may not come out).
Best wishes, and Happy July Fourth, RKV on July 4, 2023
