Leaky Con 2012 Spectacular: Potter Fandom Not Dead Yet!

I wrote an article for Christianity Today this time last year, ‘Harry Potter is Here to Stay,’ in which I argued that the last Warner Brothers film in the eight part series was “the end of the beginning rather than the beginning of the end.” My argument, though, was not that Potter-Mania would continue to grow in the directions that it had already but that growth would be through the influence the Hogwarts saga has had on the imaginations of writers and artists of the rising generation as well the expectations of readers (not to mention the cupidity of publishers and filmmakers). I expected a drop-off, frankly, in fan gatherings and the intensity of discussions about artistry and meaning as media hooks such as book publication and film releases stopped.

And I don’t think I was wrong in anticipating this drop-off. Where I was wrong was in thinking, if not saying, that the true-believers in Harry Potter fandom would become less intense in their interest in all things Hogwarts. If anything, the evidence of this summer’s gatherings in St. Andrews (UK), Ireland, Orlando, and Chicago demonstrate that Potter-philes in even greater numbers than the past will pay to meet, talk, sing, and share in a remarkable variety of media and venues about their favorite Boy Wizard.

To grasp that, read David and Toni Gras’ Harry Potter Fan Zone review of the many events that were held at Leaky Con 3 in Chicago earlier this month, a gathering without an amusement park, movie release, or publication-in-the-wings as draws to participation that surpassed in number of participants and events the Leaky Con of the previous year that had all those draws (and the cheaper air fares and hotels in Orlando). Blogger Greg’s record of his experiences there gives you some feel for the near frenetic (but much better organized!) atmosphere of this magical congress for Rowling readers. Check out, too, the funny and thoughtful article in the Chicago Tribune,Harry Potter Fans Create Magic at Leaky Con.’

I think it undeniable that the greater influence or wake of the Potter Tsunami will be in the stories being written post Deathly Hallows, much as Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings changed our ideas of what story was supposed to be about — a good argument can be made that Harry Potter is a fruit of that tree or ripple from that boulder dropped in the imaginative pond, given Ms. Rowling’s attachment to Middle Earth. Expect another generation (or three) of that ripple effect — or just look around you! As I explained in ‘Harry is Here to Stay,’ it is very difficult to understand the draw and depths of Twilight, Hunger Games, Chaos Walking, and now Divergent, without a firm grasp of Ms. Rowling’s literary accomplishment and tool box.

But Harry Potter fandom clearly isn’t going away. In something akin to the Trekkies of previous generations (who live on…) and abetted by the Internet, their love of this story and interest in all aspects of it continues to create outpourings of re-imaginings and opportunities for coming together to share this work.

I invite all doubters of this thesis to attend LeakyCon 2013 at the Oregon Convention Center, Portland, Oregon, June 27–30, next year — and a second Leaky Con 2013 at the Grand Connaught Rooms, London, England, August 8–11 that same summer (pictured staircase and banquet room). That’s right, Leaky had such success this year in Chicago they are going bi-hemispherical, Northwest America and Southeast UK, for two big bashes next year. The quantum leap made this year in organization and participation — for which, “Congratulations!” and “Thank you!” Leaky staff — makes me think they’ll pull it off professionally and at a great price. $150 is an inviting threshold most of us can cross.

And the vitality of Fandom is not just in its conventions (note the ‘Emerging from the Pensieve‘ academic meetup in October this year at James Madison University and Misti-Con 2013 next May, a relatively “intimate” gathering). Note as well the more eclectic possibilities. My favorite of these is ‘Wizards at Sea 2013,’ that bills itself as “A Tribute to One of the Greatest Stories Ever Told… on board Holland America’s beautiful Westerdam.” That’s right, a cruise ship vacation along the Alaskan coast with a Harry Potter theme. It’s July 6-13, 2013 – 7 nights — and it sails round-trip from Seattle to Juneau, Glacier Bay, Sitka, Ketchikan & Victoria, B.C. Read all about that here.

I’ll be writing about my experiences at LeakyCon 2012 when my four talks there are available online. Please share your thoughts below about Leaky Con 2012, though, right away, as well as what you think about upcoming fandom events, about the thesis of Fandom’s Vitality Unabated (FVA), or about fandom gatherings or creations not yet in existence you’d like to participate in (e.g. the opera adaptation, the television series, the Christo geographic tribute , how about a Rowling Ring-ling Brothers Crop Circle?). Is Harry Potter Fandom here to stay, even growing, or just a cult with no little vitality? I look forward to reading what you think, as always.

Off to LeakyCon 3: Harry Potter Chicago, Here We Come!

My son Timothy and I are on our way to Chicago for LeakyCon3 at the Downtown Hilton on Michigan Avenue! I have given talks at the first two LeakyCon extravaganzas and am delighted to be headed back — this time to do four talks, something of a HogwartsProfessor Greatest Hits collection. The lecture titles and descriptions are below the jump for those interested; here’s hoping that I have time before and after these two-a-day sessions Friday and Saturday morning and afternoon that I’ll have a chance to sit down and catch up with any All Pros that are coming. See you there!

BBC’s Inspector Lewis: Is Fantasy Literature Perverse?

For those of you who have read my books and blog posts here over the last decade, the name ‘Titus Burckhardt’ is not unknown. I have referenced his ideas on alchemy and Perennialism from the start and remain not-so-secretly convinced that Ms. Rowling’s reading in hermeticism that set the story scaffolding for her Hogwarts Saga was founded in Burckhardt’s Alchemy: Science of the Cosmos, Science of the Soul. His Mirror of the Intellect, too, I suspect was influential, if only in drawing out the meaning for Ms. Rowling of the many mirrors in the English fantasy tradition. Harry Potter for Nerds has an important essay by Erin Sweeney on Rowling’s astrological-alchemical artistry that assumes just this Rowling-Burckhardt connection.

I’ve also mentioned another traditional writer in thoughts posted here, Martin Lings, who was both a Perennialist and Sufi like Burkhardt and a student and friend of C. S. Lewis.’ Frankly, I think the links joining the Inkling writers and the greater Coleridgean resistance to the errors of modernity with the Perennialist school to be significant and important, both for understanding the artistry and meaning of Tolkien, Lewis, Williams, Rowling, et aliorum, which is to say the power of their work, but in understanding ourselves, as readers and as human beings. Lings’ Sacred Art of Shakespeare is the model of exposition in this regard that I have tried to emulate.

Imagine my intrigue, then, when I heard from a mentor and friend that the BBC had filmed an episode in its Inspector Lewis ‘Masterpiece Mystery’ called ‘Allegory of Love’ that explored the tradition of English fantasy out of Oxford, notably, Lewis Carroll, C. S. Lewis, and J. R. R. Tolkien, in light of Perennialist teaching. I watched it last night via Hulu plus and my wife’s laptop and I review it below the jump; please watch the show yourself before reading what follows because I make no allowance in it for those not wanting to be spoiled.

Ascendio Thoughts 1: The Harry Potter Fan Zone Review

Let’s start what I hope will be a cascade of posts about the HPEF finale in Orlando earlier this month, Ascendio 2012, with the publication of David and Toni Gras’ report that they wrote as journalists and fans under the rubric of the Harry Potter Fan Zone web site (yes, I have the Gras’ permission to do this!). Tomorrow I’ll put up my footnotes to this listing at the various points where I participated in the remarkable cavalcade of events — over 250! — that took place in the Muggle equivalent of the village down the street from Hogwarts Castle.

Ascendio 2012

By Harry Potter Fan Zone reporters, David and Toni Gras, July 2012

“…there will be a time when we must choose between what is right and what is easy.”

— Professor Albus Dumbledore.

Harry Potter Educational Fanon (HPEF) held its 8th and final event, “Ascendio”, in Orlando, Florida July 11 – 15, 2012 in the shadows of “Hogwarts Castle” at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studio’s Portofino Bay Hotel.  As Professor Dumbledore reiterated in his famous quote from “Goblet of Fire”, HPEF decided to choose the “right” path rather than the “easy” path when they sacrificially and joyfully took on the immense efforts of coordinating and organizing a conference of this magnitude for Potter fans.    Approximately 1000 loyal and enthusiastic Potter fans filled the hallways of the conference center at the hotel for 4.5 days, some dressed in Potter costumes or as Potter characters and some in regular street clothes.  All were welcome at the conference which offered something for everyone…..

Shared Text: Voldemort vs Mary Poppins at Olympics Opening?

So it’s only a rumor! The thought the Olympics opening would feature Lord Voldemort terrorizing Alice in Wonderland and being vanquished by an army of Mary Poppins (all of whom fly into the stadium via Umbrellas) is a perfect ‘Shared Text’ moment, no? I suspect everyone present will ‘get’ the Dark Lord reference and that quite a few will not recognize the Lewis Carroll and P. L. Travers heroines. Here’s hoping that many of those few will walk through the portal Harry Potter provides to English literature, especially the best in high fantasy. The Gateway drug to a life of engaging, edifying reading, etc.

And if the rumor isn’t true? Well, it ought to be. Hat tip, A2Paper.

I have fourteen posts in queue to put up over the next week or so — my experiences with friends at Ascendio 2012 in Orlando right at the top of the list and thoughts in anticipation of LeakyCon3 in Chicago early next month right behind them. I have started a new job and a new writing project, though, since returning from the Wizarding World so blogging may continue to be spotty. Thank you for standing by — did I tell you about my conversation with Veronica Roth? You’ll never believe it…
