Call For Papers: ‘The Power to Imagine Better’

There will be an academic conference at which serious readers of Harry Potter are welcome in late October next year on the campus of Marymount Manhattan College (Upper East Side, NYC). The aim is to foster discussion of the “philosophical themes” of the Hogwarts Saga but it is interdisciplinary in the sense that “submissions are welcome on any philosophical theme or issue arising in the Harry Potter corpus that intersects with metaphysics, ethics, religion, literature, and/or politics.” The premise, dear to readers of this site I think, is that this is a justified exercise both in light of the value of the work itself and because of its pervaviseness in the global culture, i.e., that Harry is our “Shared Text,” like it or not.

I’ve already checked my calendar to be sure I can go and blocked out the dates. I hope to see you all there! [The complete ‘Call For Papers’ with proposal, location, date, and contact specifics is below the jump.]

Mailbag: Links for Serious Readers and Gift Givers

Riddled With Gilt: Gilded Books for the Lover of Truth and Beauty on your Gift List (especially if you have extra gold for such things!)

The new Hunger Games? Matched, published today and an Amazon best seller right out of the gate, features a girl-two-guy threesome, a dystopian setting, and a movie deal with Disney (just in case it’s the new Twilight, too).

The HogPro Contact Tab is Working Again!

I was sent this ‘Garry Baudin’ production on YouTube by a Serious Reader. Why? You tell me; I’m just delighted the Contact Form is working again. It’s not about Harry Potter per se but I’m pretty sure y’all can pick up the postmodern cliches for practice (“Bad Metanarrative! Evil Church-folk!”) while enjoying the beautiful music, Adagio in G Minor by Albioni (Giazotti?), performed by the Berlin Philaharmonic under Herbert von Karajan:

Whoops! HogPro ‘Contact Form’ Glitch

Short version: if you have tried to contact me through the sites ‘Contact’ form in the last year, I haven’t received it. Please re-send! I respond to all my email (eventually) and apologize if your question went unanswered.

Long version: I received a great email on wands the other day via and asked my correspondent to write it up as a ‘Guest Post.’ She agreed and then wrote to say she’d posted it at HogwartsProfessor. [Read more…]
