Real or Not Real (again)
In The Hunger Games, as John and others participating in the discussion on this site have noted, one major theme is “real or not real”. In Mockingjay, Peeta is characterized as the person who has trouble determining reality because he was “highjacked”. While the brainwashing and memory tampering he has suffered is certainly a violation and a weapon used against Katniss that she and her team are challenged to overcome, I would like to discuss a second person who throughout the series appears to have a problem with “real or not real”: that person is Katniss herself.
As the ultimate survivor, Katniss would appear to have a good grip on reality. And she does on certain aspects of it. But her survival and her ultimate redemption are dependent on Peeta’s love for her (and then her love for him) – and his love she is oblivious to for a long time. ‘Hogwarts Preparatory Academy’ Online with Joel Hunter

Independent scholar Joel Hunter, formerly of Arizona State University’s Barrett Honors College, has launched a new venture called ‘Hogwarts Preparatory Academy.’ This will certainly interest HogPro readers because it features this Potter Pundit of note’s reflections not only on the Hogwarts Saga but also popular story. This week, for example, he reviewed the film ‘Whisper of the Heart.’ Check it out!

Elizabeth Baird-Hardy and I have both been to Arizona State during Prof Hunter’s tenure there and I had the pleasure of catching up with him at St Andrews University at the Potter Conference in 2012. His talk then on the Proppian analysis of Harry Potter using fairy tale elements was a highlight and is a featured piece in the paper collection from that conference that is about to be published. More on that in the coming weeks!
Joanne Rowling’s Testimony About Intrusive Press (2011)

This is important background information for the treatment of reporters in both the Hogwarts Saga and the Cormoran Strike novels. Ms Rowling’s anger and sense of violation is right out there — and seeing this video of her testimony has made me take much more seriously the possibility that her story take-down of a cynical press corps will play a much larger role in her mysteries than Rita Strike and The Daily Prophet did in Harry’s adventures.
