DH:2 Countdown Continues–Back to part 1

As we get geared up for part 2 of our final chapter to hit the big screen this week, it might be fun to see what we thought of the first half! Here are John Granger’s and Elizabeth Baird Hardy’s reviews of Deathly Hallows :1. Enjoy! And keep those comments and suggestions coming!

Leaky-Con Draws Near!

I know it’s hard to believe there could be much more interesting going on next week than a certain movie premiere, but, for quite a few of us, that event will take place in an amazing setting: at Leaky-Con at Universal Studios in  Orlando. But this fantastic conference is about much, much more than movies, of course! Our own John Granger will be presenting (see a sneak preview here), as will I. Here is a little blub about the program I’ll be doing at 9 am on Saturday, July 16 (along with my husband,  Michael). If you are coming, I hope to see you there! We will, of course, be reporting from the scene!

“See My Published Works”: Publishing, Librarianship, and the Book Industry in the Wizarding World
It should not be surprising that books which have engaged millions of readers actually include books as major plot devices, libraries and bookstores as critical settings, and writers and readers as characters both minor and major. In addition, Rowling often has a fair bit of fun in her depiction of authors, publishers, and the members of the literary industry, both lampooning the world her novels took by storm, and creating a parallel version of the literary world of Muggles. Join authors Elizabeth  Baird Hardy and Michael C. Hardy, who have worked both sides of the book production universe, to explore the texts within our shared text and the ways in which Rowling subtly, and sometimes not-so subtly, critiques the history and realities of her own profession and the industries that support it.

DH:II Movie Countdown–Remember when….

Now that we know the complete Harry Potter story from beginning to end, it is sometimes hard to remember just what a big part of our lives was once consumed with making predictions about how it all would end, how we spent those years between books feverishly speculating. In fact, my husband was not sure we should let our son read the whole series beginning to end, since we had to endure that dreadful interlibrum (wait between volumes). In fact, that wait has led me to since swear off beginning any series that was not yet complete (I did cheat for Hunger Games, since I started just a few months before Mockingjay).  The wait for the last film isn’t so tough, of course, as we know how it goes, but it is fun to look back at how we spent our time about four years ago. This fun post looks back at the many predictions made by scholars and readers before the release of the final volume, and includes votes and comments for the best, most accurate, and just plain wackiest pre-publication predictions.  Enjoy! And keep those suggestions coming about posts you would like to see released from the past!

Hunger Games Movie News: A Legendary Music Producer, a Perfect Snow, and a Two-Part Mockingjay

We try not to cover every little scrap of movie movie news here at Hogwarts Professor (Oooh, look, they’ve chosen a gaffer! ) but we do have some nifty recent announcements on which we have not yet chimed in with our two knuts’ worth of commentary. The filming of The Hunger Games  is going on now, of course. Based on reports from the casting agency providing “background” (i.e. extras), they will need the Capitol people in August, and the District 12 folks I know are done, so it seems likely that Jennifer Lawrence and her fellow Tributes are out in the wilds of western North Carolina trying to kill each other, or at least, looking like they are trying to kill each other; they have nice weather for it. Much of that filming is shrouded in secrecy, including the bit that features a permit for a big explosion scheduled near the North Fork Reservoir later this month (apples, anyone?). But a few very clear bits of news do merit our attention, as we think about music, the world’s scariest Snow, and four films for our consideration. [Read more…]
